Before the brazen decadence of the Jazz age; before the florid naturalism of Arts and Crafts, there was the graceful elegance of the Victorian era. It was indeed the Gilded Age, intricate and fanciful in a bold flourish. During this era, jewellery, clothing and architecture were busy with gingerbread and adornment, showcasing the extraordinary talents of Old World craftsmen. It was the best of times and better; it was opulent and celebratory and optimistic. This Victorian-inspired cocktail watch in 14kt solid rose gold encrusted with diamonds and rubies is such a celebration of visual art.
Glittering with nine individually set mine-cut diamonds and ten natural rubies in a field of rose gold; it was then as it is now: meant to adorn and set-apart. This ensemble is a class distinction, something that not everyone has the privilege to own. A world apart, deliciously vintage and spectacularly opulent with articulated lugs to allow the gently tapering design to present gracefully on the discerning wrist. Solid 14kt rose gold throughout. The subtly narrowing bezel is caressed with two rows of diamonds: four to the top and three to the bottom. The top articulated lug has just a hint of art deco inspiration and is embellished with a row of four rubies and crowned with a slightly larger diamond leading onto the band itself. To the bottom of the bezel are three diamonds leading to a celebration of calibré cut rectangular rubies both vertical and horizontal, these in turn give way to a crowning diamond leading on the lower band. Both the band and inside of the case back are stamped 14kt. Worth noting is that two of the upper-case rubies have tiny pressure fractures. Please be sure you are happy with this. The length of the watch and band is fixed to approximately 167mm in length.
Any adjustment would need to be undertaken by a professional. The 14kt rose gold bezel, case back and band have been ultrasonically cleaned, repolished and topped off with the original glass high dome crystal. In general the case looks utterly fantastic with only slight wear/scratches present commensurate with the age of the watch. Original, showing only slight wear.Complimenting the lustre of the case, the copper tone dial is in its original condition. The quarter hour positions are marked with Roman numerals. These along with the Bulova name are in black.
The remaining hour positions are incised red dots. The hands are original, blue/black steel, Modern style. BULOVA Swiss manual wind movement. This is a fine classic 5AB calibre, with 17 jewels marked with a T symbol for 1942.The movement has been cleaned, oiled & adjusted, and at the time of listing is running well keeping good time and ready to wear. As with all vintage watches regular servicing is recommended. From lug to lug 46.24mm long X 14.87mm wide (at the center point but excluding crown).
The band is integral to the watch. An aftermarket safety chain (plated) has been added though could easily be removed if so desired. This watch comes with its original Bulova presentation box and cardboard outer. The cream coloured cardboard outer is in astonishingly good condition for its years. The box decoration shows a slightly embossed background upon which the gold tone Bulova name is given pride of place with Fifth Avenue, New York below.
The box lid has a Were Jeweler, 87 Water Street, Newburgh, N. The long case period design inner presentation box is in as new condition having been protected by the cardboard outer and obviously cared for over the years. It is covered with the Bulova signature luxuriously sumptuous deep maroon velvet which extends not only to the sides but also onto the ends and to the base of the box also.
The sprung two hinged lid opens as it should and lifts to reveal a deep maroon silk lining with the Bulova name elongated as on the cardboard outer. Importantly there is no finger rubbing to the velvet lid where it has been opened or any appreciable wear either. The watch is mounted on a removable maroon velvet pad which nestles in a shallow recess with a maroon silk margin.
In general the presentation box is in remarkably good condition and looks virtually new, which of course it isnt and has obviously been well cared for.
